Restoring video after updating Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04)
on Dell Mini 10 (Inspiron 1010)

I let some updates download and install, and lo and behold, the GMA500 (PSB poulsbo) video stopped working again. In order to restore it, there are several options. The first and easiest, if possible is the following:

• Boot into recovery mode and choose "Drop to root terminal with networking"
• Run the following:
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude install poulsbo-driver-2d sudo aptitude install poulsbo-driver-3d sudo aptitude install poulsbo-config
• Reboot and choose the normal option in GRUB.
• Rejoice!

I discovered that, despite my best efforts, I couldn't get wireless networking to function from the recovery terminal. The first option would be to find a live ethernet connection and simply run the commands above, failing that, the following will work.

• Using a different machine (or alternate OS on the same machine) Grab copies of poulsbo-config_0.1.2~1004um2_all.deb and psb-kernel-source_4.42.0-0ubuntu2~1004um3.1_all.deb from here. In the unlikely case of link rot, I've hosted a copy of each here poulsbo-config, psb-kernel-source.
• Either toss them on a flash drive or partition you can mount from Ubuntu.
• Get to the recovery console and mount the partition (the example below reflects my system, use the appropriate partition labels and mount points for your setup).
  sudo mount /dev/disk/by-label/OS /winxp/ cd /winxp/ sudo dpkg -i poulsbo-config_0.1.2~1004um2_all.deb sudo dpkg -i psb-kernel-source_4.42.0-0ubuntu2~1004um3.1_all.deb
• If no errors cropped up during the install, reboot and rejoice!

Once everything is booted back up with the video working, be sure to add the repository and grab the packages. To fix it should it break in the future, you can completely remove psb-kernel-source and reinstall it without re-downloading the packages. During its dpkg install it re-writes it's headers for the version of Ubuntu you've got installed.
